Evaluation

Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Front cover annotations

Contents Page annotations

Double Page Spread annotations

Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The target audience for my media product is females and males aged between 16 and 25 years of age; I chose such range of audience because I want to capture the attention of young adults using modern twists on swing. It has a style that will be appropriate for a social group that likes to combine iconic compositions with swing/jazz music.

The content uses implied knowledge in order to represent the social group. The language used is simple. It includes words from my audience research. Short sentences (contents page, coverlines) are used to represent a youthful social group. This magazine includes audience feedback which has been used to determine the content and design. For example, my questionnaire found that:
Favourite colour – Purple. It represents the target social group using ideas that stemmed from their own views and opinions.
Favourite bands/solo artists – These were used in the content to represent the target social group because this is the music they’re interested in.

This YouTube clip will show the social group for my magazine, younger males and females who take an interest in swing/jazz music.

Q6: What have you learnt about techniques from the process of constructing this product?

DTP - Desktop Publishing.

There are so many ways to access media, my collage shows a handful of them. The forms of technology I used were : the 2 softwares, camera, computer/laptop, and mobile phone.

It has been interesting creating my product using the softwares Adobe PhotoShop and QuarkXPress. Both softwares allowed me to manipulate images to how I wanted them to look, for example: I used the contrast/brightness options in PhotoShop to alter my front cover image.

I learnt how lighting can alter an entire image, so I experimented using a digital camera, creative photography to capture the best image.

However, it was the first time that I used QuarkXPress; it was difficult to use at first but soon enough I felt confident with the software and went on to complete my magazine contents page and double page spread. Quark is the same software used in media profesions; I have learnt that I can successfully create a product, using Quark, making it look to be of a professional standard. Also, I found that Quark restricted me when I wanted to resize my images (as you cannot zoom in a picture box), but even with this small problem, I managed to mirror my original sketch and design a suitable magazine for my target audience, using the technology I had.

Q7: Looking back at your preliminary tas, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have managed to use a variety of skills, learnt by completing my preliminary task, to produce a successful final product. These drafts show highlight the alterations I made in order to make my final product. The techniques used in my premlinary task helped as practice with using the software.

DRAFTS:

Front cover with a normal microphone in the title (the concern regarding which microphone to use for the title was settled through audience research)

Research Skills:

I conducted my own mini-survey to determine whether the magazine title should include a "swing microphone" or "hand-held microphone" as the 'I' in 'MIC'. I showed 10 people both front covers with the two different images used in the title; 8/10 people said they preferred the "swing microphone".

TITLE - Image of swing microphone. It was later cropped to be used as the "I" in my title "MIC". I had to decide between two different types of microphones, a normal and a swing mic, both had to edited using PhotoShop
